GTA VI Characters May Gain Weight and Look Tired Without Proper Care

A detailed preview of Grand Theft Auto VI published by Dazed has revealed new information about the game’s open world, protagonist backstories, and evolving gameplay systems.

One notable addition is a deeper physical conditioning system for dual protagonists Jason and Lucia. Their weight will change based on what they eat, and regular workouts will visibly alter their muscle tone. Going too long without rest will also cause visible signs of sleep deprivation.

Rockstar Games previously used variations of these systems in earlier titles. Arthur Morgan’s body weight shifted based on food intake in Red Dead Redemption 2, while Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas featured an extensive fitness system that allowed CJ to gain muscle or fat through diet and exercise.

The character-switching mechanic has also been overhauled. Rather than operating mostly independently as the trio did in Grand Theft Auto V, Jason and Lucia can stick together or split up dynamically. Dazed highlighted a scenario where a player driving down a highway as Jason can switch over to Lucia in the passenger seat to browse her in-game phone or handle other tasks.

Rockstar expanded its production capacity considerably to support this scope. According to Dazed, the studio’s headcount has more than doubled since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. A dedicated Los Angeles office focuses entirely on designing the non-player characters that populate the world.

To capture regional authenticity, Rockstar brought in more than 50 real-world street artists to design graffiti and murals for the in-game counterpart to Wynwood, Miami’s arts district. Vehicle physics are handled by a dedicated internal team that includes professional racing drivers.

The game will also embrace Florida’s infamous eccentricities. Players will run into various virtual takes on the “Florida Man” internet meme, featuring bizarre lawbreakers and chaotic public incidents inspired by real-life news headlines.

Music remains a major pillar of the project. Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries noted that the development team drew heavily on Miami music history, spanning classic Miami bass to modern artists such as Kodak Black and Sexyy Red. The soundtrack and atmosphere reflect varied local settings, including Overtown house parties, riverfront clubs like Booby Trap on the River, and high-end South Beach clubs offering multi-thousand-dollar bottle service.

Dazed also confirmed key background details for the two leads. Jason is a military veteran working in drug smuggling, while Lucia is an aspiring fighter who was recently released from prison. Their evolving relationship forms the core narrative spine.

Player choices will reportedly shape not just mission outcomes, but the personal bond between Jason and Lucia. Dazed reports that the long-term impact of player behavior on their dynamic is significantly deeper than the honor and relationship systems found in earlier Rockstar titles.
