GTA III and Resident Evil 4 Ported to 2007 Nokia N95 Phone
Older hardware can handle cutscene rendering.
An experiment by developer Dante D. Leoncini recently went viral online after he decided to run Resident Evil 4 (the classic 2005 version) on a Nokia N95 phone, which turns 20 years old next year. The device runs on Symbian.
The video shown by Dante is not a full port of Resident Evil 4 for Symbian. The developer positions this as the first test run of a cutscene from the game on the phone.
According to him, the “bottleneck” is not rendering, but processing character animation. He states that the N95 processor has to process thousands of vertices with animations of eyes, mouth, hair, clothing, fingers, and more within milliseconds.
You can view the Resident Evil 4 cutscene test on Nokia N95 via Dante D. Leoncini’s social media account at the following link. The developer also runs a YouTube channel of the same name, Dante D. Leoncini, where he publishes other materials.
For example, he has conducted experiments with Grand Theft Auto III on the Nokia N95:
He describes this recording as testing the GTA3 to Whisk3d converter. The converter takes original game assets and uses Python to transform them into a W3D format file ready for use in Whisk3d, a 2D/3D graphics creation tool that runs on the Nokia N95.
