GTA 6 Fans Don’t Want to Pay $80 to Pre-order the Game, They Want to Pay More

When the initial announcement dropped that the base tier of Grand Theft Auto 6 would command an $80 price tag, critics argued it was an excessive demand, even for the most anticipated interactive entertainment experience in history. Yet, as the launch window draws nearer, consumer behavior indicates that a vast segment of the player base is more than willing to invest even further into Rockstar’s sprawling open-world masterpiece.

During an interview with CNBC, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick disclosed that sales for the $100 Ultimate Edition are currently outpacing the standard version. “Actually,” Zelnick noted, “it is skewing more to the premium edition.” While this trend presents a lucrative windfall for both Rockstar and its parent company, Zelnick maintained a pragmatic perspective regarding what this data truly signifies for pre-release momentum. “That might be a reflection of the fact that the most avid consumers are the ones who are pre-ordering,” the executive clarified.

Earlier in the discussion, Zelnick acknowledged that while Take-Two possesses “a great deal of pricing power” concerning GTA 6, the organization aimed to ensure the cost maintained a strong sense of relative value. “We understand that a consumer experience is the intersection of the thing itself and what you pay for it,” Zelnick stated, adding that “We would never want people to feel like this is out of my range.” This perspective aligns with statements Zelnick delivered during a Take-Two financial briefing earlier in the week, where he characterized the title as an “incredible bargain” at the baseline $80 threshold.

Addressing the specific inclusions of the $100 tier, Zelnick pointed directly to “additional content.” The official storefront listing expands on these perks, confirming that buyers who secure the Ultimate Edition early will receive a curated selection of exclusive cosmetic items alongside a complimentary month of GTA+, the subscription model tailored for ongoing advantages within GTA Online. Throughout the interview, Zelnick underscored that while expectations for GTA 6 are astronomical, leadership remains cautious about overinflating projections. Reflecting on the unprecedented longevity of GTA 5—which has shifted upwards of 200 million units since debuting in 2013—Zelnick admitted he would “never project that to occur again” regarding the sequel’s long-term trajectory.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
