Casting notices also confirm the series will draw from the narratives of God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok.

Prime Video has announced casting for its upcoming God of War series. The breakdown references several key characters, including Kratos himself. From the role descriptions, the project appears to be an adaptation of the 2018 game — effectively a partial reboot that follows an older Kratos and his son Atreus.

As with many major castings, the production is using fictional names to conceal the characters’ true identities. The lead is listed as “Zion” — a 40–60-year-old, physically formidable warrior who has lost his wife and struggles to bond with his ten-year-old son. That profile clearly points to Kratos — the former God of War who left Greece and is attempting to forge a new life in the Norse world.

His son, listed as “Joshua,” is described as a 9–12-year-old boy desperate for his father’s approval — traits that align with Atreus. Supporting roles include characters inspired by the Norse pantheon, such as “Glen,” a cunning, manipulative middle-aged man, and “Phoebe,” a mother of three fighting to keep her family intact.

It’s specifically noted that actors cast as Phoebe and Glen must be prepared to appear in explicit scenes, including nudity. That suggests the series will adopt a darker, more adult-oriented tone than the 2018 game, perhaps closer in spirit to the earlier, Greek-era Kratos titles.

According to the breakdown, God of War is being developed with a TV‑MA rating. The show is expected to feature graphic violence and intense combat sequences in the vein of Game of Thrones and Spartacus. Filming is scheduled to begin in March 2026 in Vancouver.
