FromSoftware reportedly rejected Sony’s plans for a Bloodborne remake
The developer behind the monumental Elden Ring, FromSoftware, is reportedly safeguarding its gothic masterpiece, Bloodborne, from outside hands. According to a recent disclosure from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Bluepoint Games—the studio responsible for the acclaimed Demon’s Souls remake—recently pitched a Bloodborne reimagining for 2025, only to have the proposal flatly rejected by the original creators.
Schreier indicates that while Sony’s internal metrics suggested the project was financially viable, FromSoftware was unwilling to grant permission. Bluepoint has long been considered the premier candidate for such a task, having established a sterling reputation for technical fidelity with their work on the PlayStation 5 launch title Demon’s Souls and the Shadow of the Colossus remake.
For years, the Bloodborne community has clamored for a high-definition remaster or a dedicated PlayStation 5 performance patch. Despite the fervor, these requests have been met with silence. The hesitation appears to stem from FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki’s protective stance over his creative legacy. Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida previously touched on this during an interview, suggesting that Miyazaki’s personal attachment to the title is the primary hurdle.
“My theory is that because Miyazaki-san holds Bloodborne so close to his heart, he is hesitant to let others modify his work,” Yoshida explained last year. He noted that while Miyazaki may be interested in revisiting the IP, his current schedule is too packed to oversee it personally, and he is reluctant to delegate the creative control to an external team. “The PlayStation team respects his wish. That’s my guess.”
FromSoftware’s current production slate is indeed formidable. The studio is reportedly optimizing Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2, alongside a new exclusive titled The Duskbloods. Beyond gaming, an Elden Ring cinematic adaptation is in the works with filmmaker Alex Garland. Rumors also circulate regarding a mysterious multiplatform project currently in development. Despite Sony owning the Bloodborne intellectual property, the platform holder seems content to defer to Miyazaki’s creative judgment.
As we approach the eleventh anniversary of the game’s initial release, the prospects for a modern revival seem increasingly dim. With the reported closure of Bluepoint Games and FromSoftware’s focus on new horizons, the Victorian-era nightmare may remain frozen in time on the PlayStation 4 hardware.
For those still wishing to traverse the streets of Yharnam, Bloodborne remains accessible on PlayStation 4 and continues to be playable on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility.
