The Legend of Zelda Movie: First Look, Cast and Date

Nintendo released the first three official images from its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie in November 2025. The photographs marked the start of production and revealed the lead actors in costume against a natural outdoor setting.

What the first look shows

Bo Bragason appears as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Two images are character portraits, while a third places the pair together in a broad green landscape. The photographs establish the film’s live-action designs, but they do not confirm that the story adapts any one Zelda game.

Release date and production status

The movie is scheduled for theatrical release on May 7, 2027. Nintendo confirmed in its February 2026 financial briefing that filming had begun and that the live-action adaptation remained planned for 2027.

No trailer, detailed synopsis, villain, runtime or rating has been announced as of August 2026. Claims that the film directly adapts Breath of the Wild or another specific game remain speculation.

Confirmed creative team

Wes Ball, director of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is directing. Zelda co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad are producing. Nintendo and Arad Productions are making the film, with Nintendo financing more than half of the production. Sony Pictures Entertainment is co-financing and handling worldwide theatrical distribution.

Where the images originated

The first photographs were published through the Nintendo Today app and then shared with a production update from Shigeru Miyamoto. Reports from TheWrap, Crunchyroll News and GamesRadar+ preserve the image and casting announcement.

Official confirmation

Nintendo’s original production release identifies the director, producers, financing and distributor. Its February 2026 briefing confirms that filming is underway.
