Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen stands as a titan of the modern battle shōnen genre. Even though the original manga concluded on a note that felt remarkably complete, the dark fantasy universe Akutami constructed remains brimming with untapped potential. Enter Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, a celebrated spin-off series reaching its grand finale with the release of its third volume on May 1. To celebrate this milestone, animation powerhouse MAPPA—the studio behind the primary anime adaptation—has unveiled a striking new promotional trailer.
The official Jujutsu Kaisen social media channels premiered the footage, which is now available on Shonen Jump’s YouTube portal. The animation quality is predictably stellar, seamlessly translating Akutami’s meticulously detailed art style into motion. Under the direction of Shun Miyagawa (renowned for his work on Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc) and with Sota Yamazaki of Weathering With You fame serving as chief animation director, the clip is a visual treat. Be warned, however: if you are avoiding plot revelations, exercise caution when viewing, as it contains significant manga spoilers.
Set 68 years after the mainline Jujutsu Kaisen narrative, Modulo explores a society where the fundamental rules of sorcery have shifted dramatically. The Golden Age of Jujutsu has long passed, replaced by an era where technology and sorcery are inextricably linked, signaling a departure from long-held traditions. The landscape is no longer populated by conventional cursed spirits; instead, humanity faces the Simurians, an enigmatic alien race capable of manifesting their own unique brand of cursed energy.
The core mystery of Modulo lies in the friction between the Simurians and the contemporary generation of sorcerers, all while questioning the legacy of original protagonist Yuji Itadori. By expanding the horizon of Akutami’s world, the series offers a fresh perspective, exploring novel themes while maintaining the familiar, high-stakes tension of the original saga.
Image: MAPPAWhile this promotional video serves as a tribute to the final volume of Modulo, it also functions as an unofficial proof-of-concept for a potential anime adaptation. Given that the main Jujutsu Kaisen anime—which recently concluded the initial phase of the Culling Game arc—is still ongoing, a Modulo spin-off is not yet guaranteed. However, MAPPA’s proven track record in translating Akutami’s complex narrative architecture makes them the ideal studio to take on such a project. This teaser suggests that a Modulo adaptation would strike the same masterful balance between visceral spectacle and emotional depth as its predecessor.
We await further developments with bated breath, but in the meantime, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo stands as a testament to Akutami’s growth as a writer, offering some of the most compelling storytelling the franchise has ever seen.
