Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Developers Say Ending Is Best ‘Not Explained To You By Someone Else’
During a dedicated Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy panel at PAX West, game director Naoki Hamaguchi and battle director Teruki Endo offered an in-depth look at Cid, Vincent, and the innovative FITS combat mechanic debuting in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Alongside the gameplay deep-dive, the creators issued a heartfelt plea for players to safeguard their own journey and avoid seeking out outside spoilers or definitive interpretations of the narrative’s conclusion.
A presentation slide displayed during the event encapsulated this sentiment regarding the epic series finale, stating, “We hope you experience the climax as something that’s not explained to you by someone else, but rather, as something that belongs to you.”
Final Fantasy 7 developers deep-dive into the FITS mechanic and fresh playable heroes
The combat mechanics in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation represent a major evolution for the trilogy, driven largely by the addition of Cid, Vincent, and the brand-new FITS framework. On stage at PAX West, Teruki Endo walked the audience through these additions, showcasing the distinct versatility of each hero, the depth of FITS customization, and how profoundly they will shape tactical encounters.
Cid wields a mystical lance capable of impaling multiple adversaries simultaneously, shining brightest as an aerial specialist who deals heightened damage while mid-air. This airborne dominance separates him from the rest of the roster, making him the ultimate choice for long-range, vertical engagements. Meanwhile, Vincent relies on firearms tailored for mid-range skirmishes while retaining his prowess as a close-quarters powerhouse through his Galian Beast transformation, which grants him the freedom to unleash relentless melee assaults at a moment’s notice.
The FITS system assigns specialized attributes to characters that substantially dictate their combat approach. Comprising four distinct paths, each FITS hones in on a specific battlefield role. The Warrior configuration caters to hyper-offensive tactics, encouraging relentless aggression and expanding signature abilities. Conversely, the Knight acts as a defensive FITS geared toward frontline protection and party synergy, enabling players to draw enemy aggro and absorb massive damage to keep vulnerable teammates safe.
For magic enthusiasts, the Black Mage path serves as an offensive FITS that accelerates spellcasting to bombard foes with devastating elemental surges. Alternatively, the Summoner role unlocks specialized Summon Commands, granting players direct control over various actions executed by their summon to orchestrate synchronized, catastrophic attacks. Depending on the FITS assigned to a party member, their attire will visually adapt, though the developers reassured fans that cosmetic outfits can be freely swapped regardless of the active combat specialization.
As the panel drew to a close, Hamaguchi reflected on the extraordinary journey fans have shared throughout the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project. With the trilogy nearing its grand finale, he passionately urged enthusiasts to safeguard their own spoiler-free experience.
“And that’s why, at the very end, rather than having us as developers explain the answers, we would love for players to receive them on their own as their own personal experience. The reunions we’ve built up throughout the trilogy, the bonds with our companions, and the final resolve. All of this leads to this moment — the third title. We truly hope that you all experience these final moments while carrying in your hearts the journey and the feelings that you’ve built up along the way.”
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to launch for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S on April 8, 2027.
