Palworld Developer Defends Crimson Desert, Calls It One of the Decade’s Most Ambitious Games
Palworld developer John “Bucky” Buckley has defended Crimson Desert, calling it one of the most technologically ambitious games of the past decade and urging players not to dismiss Pearl Abyss’ experiments because of individual flaws.
The Pocketpair representative believes Crimson Desert has been unfairly criticized for not matching conventional expectations of linear role-playing games.
Buckley commented on the discussion surrounding the Charting the Unknown expansion on X. In his view, the breadth of the game’s mechanics and its technical ambitions deserve recognition, even if some elements need more work. He also believes developers should have more freedom to experiment rather than endlessly release similar AAA games.
Buckley pointed to what he sees as a contradiction in the gaming industry: companies frequently talk about the need for creative freedom, but mostly reward proven, safe choices. He said Crimson Desert is trying to take a different path, and he prefers that risk to another project following patterns players have known for 15 years.

Charting the Unknown has not been universally praised. About 72% of its Steam reviews are positive, with players pointing to shortcomings and the need for further fixes. Buckley does not consider Crimson Desert perfect, but believes the developers’ ambition deserves more respect.
