Take-Two CEO Acknowledges GTA VI Will Be Pirated and Says Company Is Preparing
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says piracy of GTA VI is inevitable, and the company is prepared to use technical measures and legal action to combat illegal distribution.
In an interview at WSJ Tech, Zelnick said piracy is an unavoidable part of the entertainment industry. He cited the film industry as an example, saying illegal copies accounted for 10% to 20% of the market. In the music industry, that figure reached 80% in the mid-2000s before falling significantly.
Zelnick said pirates face additional obstacles in the gaming industry. The large size of modern games and the complexity of hardware make illegal distribution more difficult, while regular developer updates create further problems for people trying to run pirated versions.
Zelnick said Take-Two is prepared to introduce additional technical protections and take legal action if piracy reaches a significant scale.
Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
