God of War Creator Faces Player Backlash Over Phantom Blade Zero Dispute
God of War and Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe has weighed in on IGN China’s criticism of Western game developers following the release of Phantom Blade Zero. In response, some players accused him of missing the journalists’ point.
IGN China’s editorial team said developers in Europe and North America had become “hostages to political correctness” and were releasing an increasing number of “trash games” that failed commercially. The journalists argued that China’s gaming industry could improve the situation. They cited Phantom Blade Zero as an example, noting that it received numerous 10/10 scores and sold more than 4 million copies in a few days.
Jaffe responded to the article by focusing on censorship, China’s political system, and the lack of freedom of speech rather than discussing gameplay.
Some users argued that Jaffe had become part of the problem himself, accusing Western creators of engaging in politics and lecturing audiences instead of working on games. They said many players were tired of being lectured and wanted entertainment without political messages.
