Fans Revive Cult Japanese RPG Xenogears After 28 Years
Fans are rebuilding the classic jRPG Xenogears from scratch on the Godot engine in a project called Xenogears Atlas, 28 years after the original game’s release.
Fans have started recreating Xenogears, one of the most distinctive jRPGs from the original PlayStation era, on the modern Godot engine 28 years after the original launch.
The Xenogears Atlas project is not a standard port or emulator. The creators are rebuilding the game from scratch by analyzing data from the original discs. They are recreating maps, dialogue, camera movements, animations, music, events, and story scenes while striving to match the PlayStation version as closely as possible.
The project is at an early stage, but the team has already shown the beginning of the adventure in Lahan village. Future updates will showcase new locations, the full introductory sequence, the world map, and the combat system.
The creators also intend to adapt Xenogears to modern standards by adding a 16:9 widescreen format, with plans for improved textures and lighting in the future. At the same time, cutscenes and dialogue boxes will keep a 4:3 aspect ratio to prevent image stretching.
Xenogears was released in 1998 and has still not received a proper remaster from Square Enix.
