Fallout Officially Returns with Two Remakes of Beloved Games

Bethesda Softworks has officially confirmed the long-awaited arrival of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remasters. The announcement, unveiled this past Friday as part of a comprehensive long-term roadmap, signals a significant commitment to revitalizing the franchise. Beyond these visual overhauls, the studio verified that Fallout 5 has entered the pre-production phase and that a fresh project is currently in the works at Obsidian Entertainment.

“We have multiple Fallout projects currently in active development,” Bethesda stated in an official press release. These initiatives include Fallout 5—touted as the studio’s definitive “long-range destination”—and a substantial expansion for Fallout 76 titled Raven Rock. Scheduled for 2027, this expansion will function as a prequel narrative set prior to the events of Fallout 3.

The confirmation of remasters for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas finally puts years of industry speculation to rest. While the studio has kept specific release windows and technical details under wraps, these titles have reportedly been circulating through the development pipeline for quite some time. Public knowledge of a Fallout 3 remaster first surfaced as early as 2020, thanks to internal court filings during the Federal Trade Commission’s review of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Regarding community events, Bethesda noted that there will be no “traditional Fallout Day broadcast” in 2026. Instead, the team is curating a special event for the franchise’s 30th anniversary in 2027, which will be celebrated with a live, in-person gathering in Washington, D.C. The studio has traditionally observed Fallout Day on October 23, the canonical date of the Great War.

These upcoming remasters follow the success of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, a collaborative effort between Virtuos and Bethesda Game Studios launched last year. Additionally, 2025 marked the 10th anniversary of Fallout 4, which was commemorated with the release of the Anniversary Edition—a comprehensive bundle featuring the base game, all six original expansions, and a wealth of content from the Creation Club.

First launched in 2008, Fallout 3 served as the series’ transition into 3D, marking Bethesda’s debut with the franchise after securing the rights from Interplay Entertainment. Set in a post-nuclear Washington D.C., the game follows a young Vault dweller navigating a desolate wasteland to locate their father. Its successor, 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas, shifted the action to the Mojave Desert, tasking players with navigating the complex political landscape of factions competing for dominance.
