Could Marvel’s Wolverine Cost Sony a Top Nomination at The Game Awards Due to Low Scores
Marvel’s Wolverine holds a Metacritic score of 78, potentially missing out on a Game of the Year nomination and breaking Sony’s 11-year streak at The Game Awards.
Reviews for Marvel’s Wolverine were published last week, yielding moderate scores as reviewers grew tired of repetitive combat and split opinions on the story. Polygon called the game “the biggest disappointment of the PS5 era.”
Throughout the history of The Game Awards, 2014 remains the only year Sony did not receive a Game of the Year nomination. Over the following 11 years, the publisher’s titles earned 14 nominations and won three times: God of War in 2018, The Last of Us Part II in 2020, and Astro Bot in 2024.

At the same time, Sony faces growing competition from large-scale role-playing games like Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. In 2026, the publisher’s last hope rests on Saros from Housemarque, which holds an 87 on Metacritic, although Returnal from the same studio did not receive a nomination in 2021. If Wolverine truly misses out on the contender list, Sony will go without a chance at winning Game of the Year for the first time since 2014.
