Some enthusiasts take it upon themselves to modernize the classics.

At the end of October, Fallout 2 fans observe the game’s anniversary. A user known as alien-mcl has shared his work — an effort to reinterpret the classic in full 3D:

Not long ago, Todd Howard suggested there likely won’t be remasters of the original Fallout and Fallout 2. I found that disappointing — I’d been hoping someone would revive the old classics in a modern presentation.

So alien-mcl chose to act. After over 120 hours spent on 3D modeling, texturing, painting, coding, level design and learning the tools (he began with no prior UE5 experience), he recreated the opening area “Vault 8” as a full 3D level using Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor.

This isn’t a final release, but the level is broadly complete at this stage. It can be played end-to-end using the character integrated into Unreal Editor; movement follows a hexagonal grid with full pathfinding.
