Everything We Learned About Kirby Air Ride in Today’s Nintendo Direct
Today Nintendo aired an hour-long Kirby Air Riders Direct featuring director Masahiro Sakurai. The presentation — the second dedicated showcase this year — revealed new modes, additional riders and machines, fresh Copy Abilities, an upcoming online demo, more Amiibo, and other gameplay systems straight from the development team.
Key takeaways from the Direct
The sections below summarize everything Sakurai covered, laid out in the order presented.
Top Ride
Top Ride returns as a compact, isometric battler inspired by the original Kirby Air Ride minigame. For the sequel, Sakurai expanded it substantially: standard Air Ride abilities, items, and short, brisk races make Top Ride ideal for quick matches and frantic multiplayer sessions.
Road Trip
Road Trip is a new single-player adventure that sends your chosen rider across a branching series of stages and challenges. You’ll pick lanes (left, center, right) to set objectives — timed races, encounters, and mini-events — and encounter other modes like Top Ride and Air Ride as part of the journey. Along the way you can spend currency at roadside shops and restore health at cafés.
The cast includes Kirby alongside King Dedede, Starman, Waddle Dee, and many other familiar faces. The story sets off when vehicles that fell from the sky begin to behave erratically, prompting a cross-country investigation.
Licenses and Online Interactivity
Players create a License at the start of their adventure. This profile displays your Class and Global Win Power, which affect matchmaking for online modes. Air Ride, Top Ride, and City Trial will each use class systems appropriate to their formats. The License is also cosmetically customizable as you unlock items during play.
The online hub supports emotes, a social lobby, spectating on a big-screen display, an in-game jukebox, and other ways to interact with other players.
Copy Abilities
Sakurai demonstrated several Copy Abilities that alter combat and movement during races:
- Needle — Charge boosts to extend needles and spike nearby rivals.
- Freeze — Surround yourself with a chilling field while boost-charging; frozen opponents will slide.
- Sleep — Enter a sleep state and shake the stick to wake up.
- Fighter — Auto-kick nearby foes and strengthen your Quick Spin attack.
- Drill — Burrow underground when boost-charged to evade attacks; release for a launch strike.
- Flash — Dash with an electrified rush that stuns enemies on impact.
- Missile — Auto-propel forward and tap the special button to trigger explosions.
Air Ride Courses
Sakurai revealed a mixture of new tracks and returning classics:
- New tracks:
- Airtopia Ruins — Ancient civilization in ruin.
- Crystalline Fissure — Sparkling crystal formations with hidden magma hazards.
- Steamgust Forge — Steam-driven, industrial stage with a fleet of aircraft.
- Mystery ??? — Footage suggested a futuristic, mechanical arena; name and details are withheld.
- Returning courses (from Kirby Air Ride):
- Fantasy Meadows
- Celestial Valley
- Sky Sands
- Frozen Hillside
- Magma Flows
- Beanstalk Park
- Machine Passage
- Checker Knights
- Nebula Belt
Between the returning and new stages, Sakurai said the game will include 18 courses in total. Returning tracks must be unlocked by playing on the new maps, and their cruising speeds have been increased compared to the original.
Air Ride Relay is a new variant where you choose a sequence of machines and automatically switch to the next one after each lap, adding strategic depth to multi-vehicle races.
City Trial
City Trial returns with new power-ups and features:
- Speed Up — Temporary velocity boost.
- Dizzy Beam — Disorients opponents’ controls.
- Special Up — Charges your special gauge.
- Item Catcher — Absorbs nearby items within a ring.
- Multi-Missile — Lock onto multiple targets.
- Size Up — Grow giant for increased power.
- Mega Cannon — Obliterate obstacles and terrain in front of you.
Two legendary machines — the Dragoon and the Hydra — can be assembled by collecting all parts scattered across the map. The Dragoon enables free flight across Skyah, while the Hydra plows the ground and wrecks everything in its path.
City Trial Team Battles split players into two teams of six. Legendary parts are pooled within the team; the player who collects the final component gets to pilot the completed machine. There’s also a Free Run mode where you can roam Skyah without a timer, access an underground garage with every machine, and summon vehicles from the pause menu.
The Flight Warp Star is a Free Run-exclusive craft with extreme flight performance, contrail drawing, and Photo Mode support. Photo Mode is available across all game modes.
New Riders
Sakurai introduced several additional riders with distinct handling profiles and gimmicks:
- Taranza — A nimble arachnid with web-based abilities and tight controls.
- Lololo & Lalala — A two-in-one rider pair that swaps positions via Quick Spin.
- Daroach — A sly thief who can swipe opponents’ Copy Abilities.
- Rocky — Compact and resilient, trades size for durability.
- Rick — A speedy hamster who can sprint on foot.
- Scarfy — Polite until provoked, then aggressive.
- Marx — Charming but dangerous — a fragile rider with high damage potential.
- Waddle Dee — Lightweight and easy to accelerate, offering smooth handling.
Transform Star and other machines
The Transform Star shifts between a flying star and a bike; Quick Spin swaps its form. Other machines confirmed include:
- Formula Star — Exceptional top speed if you maintain momentum.
- Hop Star — Performs a jump on each Quick Spin.
- Jet Star — Gains rapid acceleration when taking off.
- Wheelie’s Scooter — Compact, stylish, and highly maneuverable.
- Bull Tank — Heavily armored, charges forward and soaks up damage.
Riders remain non-verbal in keeping with series tradition, though machines emit cries when destroyed. Announcements and voice cues will be available in selectable languages and genders.
Stadium Collection
Stadium events include many competitive and arcade-style modes:
- Button Rush — Contest control by riding over buttons.
- High Jump — Hold the stick and leap for height.
- Big Battle — Grow giant and fight for dominance.
- Oval Circuit — Classic circuit racing.
- Rail Panic — Use grind rails to accelerate ahead.
- Beam Gauntlet — Navigate laser hazards and reach the goal.
- VS. Boss — New boss variants, including the mechanical Robo Dedede, offer unique boss-battle experiences. Robo Dedede alternates between a hammer-wielding King Dedede form on foot and a destructive Car form on the track.
Checklist, Main Menu, and Systems
The game features an expansive Checklist system with objectives tied to different modes. Completing objectives awards rewards and reveals tiles in a larger puzzle that eventually uncovers an image. Adjacent tiles show related goals, making it simple to plan completion paths.
The Miles Shop lets players spend Miles earned across modes to purchase vehicles, accessories, and cosmetic items — performance upgrades are not sold. Defeating rivals also nets Gummies, collectible models of machines that populate a dedicated gallery. A Kirby-shaped cursor lets you interact with the Gummy collection.
Music options are robust: composer Shogo Sakai returns and is joined by Noriyuki Iwadare. You can adjust song frequency in City Trial and listen to alternate versions of each track. Sakurai indicated the soundtrack will eventually arrive in the Nintendo Music app.
Headwear and Specials
Customizable headwear options include:
- Red Cap, Crown, Silk Hat, Ribbon, Onigiri, Sunglasses, Bull Horns, Floral Pin, Topknot
Note: Copy Ability headwear picked up during a match temporarily overrides your chosen customization.
Specials showcased include Golden Waddle Dee, Mock Dark Matter, Meteor Rocky, Knuckle Rush, Rip-Roaring Rick, and True-Form Marx.
New Amiibo
Sakurai revealed additional Amiibo plans: Kirby & Warp Star and Bandana Waddle Dee & Winged Star will release on November 20, 2025 — the game’s launch date. The Meta Knight & Shadow Star Amiibo is due on March 5, 2026, with King Dedede & Tank Star and Chef Kawasaki & Hop Star scheduled later in 2026.
Online Demo Event — Global Test Ride
Nintendo confirmed an online demo event (Global Test Ride) allowing players to try the game before its November 20, 2025 launch. Check official channels for exact times and participating regions.
