Dropout Challenges Cartoon Network with Hilarious New Series

Dropout is currently navigating a bold new chapter of creative expansion. Over the last several months, the comedy-centric streaming platform—the successor to the CollegeHumor legacy—has rolled out a series of ambitious ventures. These include the launch of an optional “Superfans” subscription tier, the release of their first physical media (a Game Changer Blu-ray set that instantly sold out), and a linear streaming channel designed to replicate the nostalgic, “always-on” experience of traditional cable TV.

The platform also recently secured its first major licensing agreement for the unsettlingly surreal puppet series Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared. Furthermore, March brought a surprising mainstream crossover when CEO Sam Reich and several Game Changer regulars—including Jacob Wysocki, Zac Oyama, Vic Michaelis, and Anna Garcia—appeared as themselves on the ABC drama The Rookie.

Looking ahead, Dropout is doubling down on original animation. The company has commissioned a suite of 25 independent animated shorts, set to be released every two weeks under the title Toonout. The initial teaser suggests a vibe reminiscent of Cartoon Network’s more experimental, “golden age” era.

While Dropout’s library already features animated titles like the visceral educational parody WTF 101, the supernatural workplace comedy Cartoon Hell, and the Star Wars-inspired Troopers: Animated, those projects were largely holdovers from the CollegeHumor era. Toonout marks a significant milestone as the first original animated production greenlit entirely within the Dropout ecosystem since the service’s 2018 rebranding.

Though specific plot details remain under wraps, the service has unveiled a prestigious list of contributing creators:

The initial six installments will feature the work of Raj Brueggemann (Big City Greens), Victor Courtright (Aquaman: King of Atlantis), Jonathon Wallach (Big City Greens), Kay Hayes (Monsters at Work), Violaine Briat (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), and Amphibia creator Matt Braly.

Toonout is scheduled to premiere on March 24, with subsequent episodes dropping every other Tuesday.
