While Kingdom Hearts undoubtedly remains the gold standard for eccentric Disney crossovers, Twisted Wonderland—a wildly popular gacha game that reimagines iconic Disney villains as striking anime characters—comes exceptionally close. Disney Japan has officially announced that the second season of the franchise’s television adaptation will premiere this coming December, streaming exclusively on Disney Plus.

The upcoming narrative arc focuses directly on the Savanaclaw dormitory, which draws heavy aesthetic inspiration from Scar in The Lion King. True to its origins, this installment will feature a prominent lineup of feline-eared characters. For newcomers, Disney Twisted Wonderland unfolds at Night Raven College, an elite institution where each residential hall corresponds to the legacy of a legendary Disney antagonist. Rather than featuring direct adaptations of specific villains, the dorms serve as creative homages; for instance, several charismatic students take stylistic cues from Ursula and her cohorts from The Little Mermaid. Renowned Black Butler creator Yana Toboso was deeply involved in the project, personally conceptualizing the character designs and penning the script.

The premiere season of the anime series launched last year across eight episodes, spotlighting the Heartslabyul Dorm, which is modeled after the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. The television project is slated for a three-season run, complementing an ongoing manga adaptation.

For the second season, Takahiro Natori returns to direct and oversee series composition, working alongside co-director Shin Kataga. Yoichi Kato leads the writing team, while Haruka Nakana and Akane Sato adapt Toboso’s original character artwork. Animation duties remain with Yumeta Company and Graphinica.

The plot centers on Yuuken Enma, an ordinary protagonist transported into a fantastical realm via a magic mirror—incorporating classic isekai tropes. While searching for a way back home, he builds relationships with the academy’s elite student body. The source mobile game has achieved monumental success, pulling in over $715 million and securing upwards of 6 million downloads worldwide since its 2020 launch.
