Disney’s Biggest Flop in Recent Years: “Tron: Ares” to Lose More Than $130 Million — Reports

The long‑awaited return of the Tron franchise has left Disney facing substantial financial losses.

Tron: Ares has become one of Disney’s most significant commercial disappointments in recent years. According to Deadline, the project’s combined costs — encompassing production, marketing and reshoots — reached roughly $347.5 million.

Estimated total revenue, which includes theatrical receipts, digital sales, television rights and other income streams, stands at about $214.8 million. That translates to an approximate net loss for the studio of $132.7 million.

The film’s budget was originally projected at $170–180 million but ultimately climbed to around $220 million. Notable extra expenses were tied to the promotional campaign, including a premiere featuring Nine Inch Nails and an elaborate laser show in Hollywood.

At the time of publication, Tron: Ares had earned $103 million worldwide, and the film dropped 67% at the box office in its second weekend, with audience numbers continuing to dwindle. Even in a best‑case scenario — roughly $160 million globally — the release would still fail to recoup its costs.

Tron: Ares premiered on October 10, 2025. It is the third installment in the cult science‑fiction series that began in 1982. While early aggregators ranked it among the season’s most anticipated releases, the outcome was mixed: a 53% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes versus 86% positive audience reviews, which proved insufficient to drive widespread box‑office success.
