Disney could lose over $100 million on the new Moana

Disney is projected to face a financial shortfall of at least $100–125 million on its live-action “Moana” remake, according to industry reports from Deadline.

The film opened to a lackluster $95 million during its debut weekend. With a production budget of $250 million and an additional $120 million invested in global marketing, the total expenditure has climbed to $370 million. To break even, “Moana” would need to generate double that figure—approximately $740 million—a milestone that appears increasingly unlikely following such a weak start.

The remake stars Catherine Laga’aia and Dwayne Johnson, who reprises his role as the demigod Maui, under the direction of Thomas Kail (“Hamilton”). Beyond its financial struggles, the film has also been panned by critics, garnering a dismal 32% rating on Rotten Tomatoes—marking a new low for a Disney production.

The original 2016 animated musical about the Polynesian princess was a resounding success, grossing over $680 million, while its 2024 animated sequel surpassed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
