Disney Confirms Darkwing Duck Reboot for Disney+ 35 Years After Original Series
Disney is digging through its animation vault again. This time it has pulled out a duck who has waited 35 years for another round against some very silly villains. Disney has confirmed that Darkwing Duck is returning in a new series for Disney Plus.
Drake Mallard will be back as the crime-fighting Darkwing. Classic villains including Negaduck and Megavolt return too. He will also reunite with his allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana, though the stakes are bigger this time. A whole universe is on the line.
The setup
Disney’s official synopsis explains the premise:
For the last 35 years, Darkwing Duck has been trapped in his worst nightmare: an alternate world that’s never heard of his superhero exploits. Now a rebellious teen named Duckie who knows all about his heroic past shows up to pull this ego-fueled vigilante back into battle. Together, this unlikely duo will get dangerous to fight old enemies like Negaduck and Megavolt and reunite with allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana to save the entire universe.
Voice cast
Mark Hamill headlines the voice cast as Drake Mallard/Darkwing Duck. Seth Rogen plays Launchpad McQuack, Lizzy Caplan voices Gosalyn Mallard, and Lilimar voices Duckie. Dan Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Kathryn Newton, Teo Briones, Tyler Dean Flores, Katie Rich and Nat Faxon round out the cast.

Tad Stones, the creator of Darkwing Duck, consulted on the new series, according to a Disney news release. Stones said, “Like every other fan of the original show, I’m excited to see Darkwing getting dangerous again in a whole new series.”
Darkwing’s history
The announcement fits Disney’s habit of reviving characters from its animated back catalog. Darkwing already returned in Disney’s 2017 DuckTales reboot. Now he gets another chance to lead a series of his own.
The original Darkwing Duck premiered in 1991 and ran for 91 episodes across Disney Channel, ABC and syndication. The character also starred in NES and Game Boy games and later appeared in Disney comics. Jim Cummings originally voiced Darkwing, and Chris Diamantopoulos took over the role in 2017. The original series is currently streaming on Disney Plus.
Disney has not announced a release date for the new series. Fans will have to wait for Darkwing to emerge from his usual cloud of blue smoke and declare he’s ready to get dangerous again.
