Disney Animator Hand‑Drew All 11,000 Frames of This Beautiful Short Film

Disney’s Brother Bear often sits in the studio’s quieter catalog — it doesn’t carry the instant-name recognition of classics like Sleeping Beauty or Snow White. Its tone shifts between a wistful drama rooted in Indigenous shapeshifting traditions and lighter, comedic beats, but the film contains breathtaking animation and a genuine, resonant meditation on humanity’s relationship with the natural world. The short film “Snow Bear,” an 11-minute hand-drawn piece from Brother Bear co-director Aaron Blaise, brings those strengths into sharper focus. Blaise — who served as a supervising animator on The Lion King and Mulan — has said he chose to helm Brother Bear in part because he wanted the chance to animate bears; in a later interview he described taking the job for that very reason. For Snow Bear he returned to that passion: a representative reports Blaise produced roughly 11,000 drawings and spent about three years crafting the short largely on his own.

Snow Bear is a largely wordless vignette about a solitary polar bear crossing the Arctic in search of companionship. The bear’s attempts to befriend other creatures are rebuffed until it fashions a playmate from snow — a tender, child-friendly premise that carries a sharper undertone about climate change and the shrinking sea ice that threatens polar bear habitat. A condensed, five-minute making-of featurette on YouTube details how Blaise enlisted Oscar-winner and Brother Bear composer Mark Mancina to score the short and how Blaise’s background as a painter influenced the film’s design and color palette. Watch the featurette.
