New cast members join the “Harry Potter” series
HBO has announced several fresh casting additions for its upcoming television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series. David Threlfall (“Shameless”) is set to voice the Sorting Hat, the iconic artifact responsible for assigning first-year students to their Hogwarts houses. Leo Bill will portray Nearly Headless Nick, the resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower; Andrew Brook will step into the role of the Slytherin ghost, the Bloody Baron; and Daniel Fearn will embody the Fat Friar, representing Hufflepuff. Additionally, Laura Smyth has been cast as the Fat Lady, the enchanted portrait guarding the entrance to the Gryffindor common room.
This quintet joins a previously announced stellar ensemble that includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
The inaugural season will faithfully adapt “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” Francesca Gardiner serves as the showrunner, while Mark Mylod will direct multiple episodes. The highly anticipated series is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026, across HBO and HBO Max.
