Cinemas refused to screen “The New Adventures of Cliff Booth”
Major US theater chains Regal and Cinemark have declined to screen David Fincher’s upcoming film, ‘The Misadventures of Cliff Booth’, on IMAX screens. The decision stems from the movie’s compressed theatrical window: Netflix scheduled a theatrical debut for November 25, followed by a streaming release on the platform just a month later, on December 23.
Consequently, the Brad Pitt-starrer will forfeit a substantial portion of its anticipated IMAX engagements. AMC has stepped up to support the release, enabling the film to secure roughly 550 screens globally, with about 200 located across the United States. Additionally, several independent cinemas have agreed to participate in the rollout.
Regal justified its stance by noting that abbreviated theatrical windows severely curtail exhibition revenue potential and undermine the value of the big-screen experience. Instead, the chain opted to prioritize titles with more traditional, extended exclusivity periods—most notably Lionsgate’s ‘The Hunger Games’ prequel, ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’, arriving November 20.
‘The Misadventures of Cliff Booth’ follows the further exploits of the fan-favorite character introduced in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’.
