Director Found for New Star Wars Trilogy With Filming Slated for 2027
The films are expected to kick off a new story set outside the Skywalker saga.
Journalist Caleb Williams reports that Lucasfilm has already chosen a director for the new Star Wars trilogy being developed by writer and producer Simon Kinberg:
“A small detail… A director has been found for Simon Kinberg’s new Star Wars trilogy. Kinberg himself was not considered for the role. Production is rapidly picking up steam, and filming could begin as early as next year.”
Development of the trilogy became known in November 2024. Kinberg, who previously worked on the animated series Star Wars Rebels, will write the scripts and serve as a producer for all three movies. In early 2026, Kathleen Kennedy stated that the writer had reworked the plot and prepared a detailed outline of about 70 pages.

No other official details about the new trilogy are available yet. According to Entertainment Weekly, the films will start a new story and will not be a direct continuation of the Skywalker saga. The plot, cast, and release dates have not been disclosed yet.
