Chris Pratt lost 60 pounds before playing Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy. On the set of the sci-fi thriller Mercy, he asked to be strapped into an executioner’s chair for hours at a time to get into his character’s mind. In the 2016 sci-fi thriller Passengers, his character faces a different challenge: loneliness in space.

Passengers came out in the same year that NASA’s Juno spacecraft entered orbit around Jupiter and astronaut Scott Kelly completed a record-breaking 340-day mission aboard the International Space Station. The film earned $303.8 million worldwide during its theatrical run.

Pratt plays Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer, opposite Jennifer Lawrence as Aurora Lane, a journalist and author. Both are aboard the luxury starship Avalon, which is carrying about 5,000 colonists to a new planet on a journey expected to take 120 years.

Everyone is supposed to remain asleep in hibernation pods until arrival. But 30 years into the voyage, an asteroid collision causes Preston’s pod to malfunction and wakes him. After a year alone on the ship, he wakes Lane because he wants companionship.

The two passengers gradually fall in love, but Preston lets Lane believe that a malfunction woke her. His decision eventually drives a wedge between them.

The film asks what someone might do when faced with a life alone in space. Director Morten Tyldum called Preston’s choice “both uncomfortable and very human.”

In a 2016 interview with Fandango, Tyldum said, “I don’t think there are a lot of people that would say: ‘I would never do what Chris’ character does.’ I dare people to say it, because I think they would be lying. I would have done it myself. It’s disturbing because we would have done the same thing.”

Tyldum also called Pratt the “perfect choice” for Preston. “He’s extraordinarily good at making the audience sympathize and empathize with him, and also put themselves in his place,” he told Fandango.

Passengers has a 30% critics’ score and a 63% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is available to stream for free on YouTube.
