Director Discusses Sci-Fi Thriller Hot Spot Starring Noomi Rapace

Agnieszka Smoczynska brings a distinct, surreal vision to her new movie Hot Spot. Packed with cyber witches, blood-transfusion worms, 1980s retrofuturist noir attire, and sun-scorched landscapes, the sci-fi detective story challenges conventional narrative structure. An omnipotent artificial intelligence called “The Head” dominates the setting, leaving humanity completely dependent on technology to survive.

Noomi Rapace, known for roles in Prometheus and Constellation, stars as Rana, an elusive rebel leader who rejects the digital system. Andrzej Konopka plays the central protagonist, Djonny. Smoczynska approaches the mystery without relying on straightforward plot progression, aiming instead for an immersive sensory journey.

“Hot Spot’s not about following the plot,” Smoczynska said. “It’s rather to experience this world and to ask the question about this world, and to ask the question about our world here, and also what defines us.”

The concept originated with screenwriter Robert Bolesto, who previously wrote Smoczynska’s 2015 mermaid horror feature, The Lure. Bolesto initially pitched an idea centered on a witch living in a refugee camp during the European migrant crisis. The script evolved to incorporate anxieties surrounding deepfakes, misinformation, and machine intelligence well before tools like ChatGPT became mainstream cultural topics. Smoczynska noted that Bolesto “captured the DNA of the now, of our current world.”

Smoczynska describes Hot Spot as a poetic and metaphorical examination of modern crises, balancing large-scale fears of war and climate disaster with intimate concerns such as “the fear for our beloved ones, for our children.” Her goal was to juxtapose that dread with tenderness and love. To build the world, she first collaborated with animator Tomek Popakul to sketch character designs for Djonny and Rana before expanding the broader visual environment.

Filming took place across Greece, using scorched terrain, ancient ruins, and the abandoned Ellinikon airport, a facility that previously served as a real refugee camp. Smoczynska chose the country for its historical weight, observing that “the whole European culture was born” there. The classical architecture and dry landscapes frame a society struggling under technological dependence.

Smoczynska spent five years refining the visual narrative of Hot Spot, prioritizing atmosphere and artistic exploration over tidy resolutions. “I also am very interested in exploring the language of the cinema,” she said.

Hot Spot is playing in select theaters across the United States.
