Developers Explain Why Marvel’s Wolverine Had to Be Rebuilt Almost from Scratch
Insomniac Games has substantially rebuilt Marvel’s Wolverine since its 2021 reveal, revamping its health recovery mechanics, level design, and overall level of violence.
Creative director Marcus Smith told MeriStation about the game’s development, admitting that the team initially questioned whether the studio was the right fit for such a brutal project. Marvel, however, granted the developers full creative freedom.
We had internal discussions about whether we were the right studio to make such a violent game. Marvel supported us and gave us complete freedom. We didn’t want to simplify the gameplay under any circumstances.
Insomniac developed dedicated technology to handle blood physics: it flows down walls naturally and reacts differently on clothing depending on the fabric structure. Players will also have the option to tone down or completely disable dismemberment and other gore effects.
The original healing mechanic forced Logan to retreat from combat and wait for his health to recover. The team decided this passive approach contradicted his character and designed a Rage system instead, which restores health through aggressive offense.
The developers also moved away from the open-world format used in Marvel’s Spider-Man, opting for more contained environments. The narrative will be an entirely original story rather than a retelling of Wolverine’s origin. Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to release on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
