DC’s Black Lightning Leaving Netflix Next Week

Online comic book communities frequently recirculate bizarre panels out of context. One recurring staple comes from the late Dwayne McDuffie’s late-2000s run on Justice League of America, where Vixen (Mari McCabe) encounters the Brown Bomber. The character, a bald white man who transforms into a superpowered Black hero whenever he shouts “Black Power”, leaves her appalled.

The bizarre hero has real roots in DC Comics history. In her introduction to the 2016 trade paperback collecting the original run, co-creator Jenny Isabella described DC’s 1977 pitch for a character called the Black Bomber. That concept featured a bigoted white Vietnam veteran who turned into a Black superhero “in moments of stress.” DC hired Isabella to polish the first two issues and take over as the sole writer for the third. Isabella balked at the premise, which would have made DC’s first headlining Black solo lead a white man. She returned to the drawing board and pitched Jefferson Pierce instead.

Four decades later, Pierce became the focus of Black Lightning on The CW, which ran for 58 episodes across four seasons between 2018 and 2021 as part of the Arrowverse. Viewers looking to stream the adaptation have limited time, as the series departs Netflix on Aug. 31.

Is Black Lightning worth watching?

The series begins with Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) serving as a high school principal in Freeland, Georgia. The community is terrorized by a local street gang known as the 100. Pierce retired his Black Lightning alter ego nine years earlier after the vigilante life wrecked his marriage and frightened his children. When gang members kidnap his daughters Jennifer (China Anne McClain) and Anissa (Nafessa Williams), Pierce suits up again. He remains active as his daughters manifest their own abilities as Thunder and Lightning.

For its first two seasons, Black Lightning operated largely independently before joining the larger Arrowverse and its multiversal crossovers. The series stays close to comic lore, grounding its narrative in family dynamics and Pierce’s rivalry with Tobias Whale (Marvin Jones III). While Arrow leaned heavily into ninja storylines and Legends of Tomorrow went in a comedic time-travel direction, Black Lightning maintained a distinct street-level perspective. For viewers who want an accessible superhero drama without tracking the intricate lore of The Flash, the series serves as a smart alternative.

All four seasons of Black Lightning leave Netflix on Aug. 31.
