David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Sequel Receives Release Update

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood is receiving an official sequel, with David Fincher taking over directing duties from Tarantino. The Fight Club and Seven filmmaker is directing from a screenplay penned by Tarantino, continuing the story of stuntman Cliff Booth.

Netflix shared a first look at the project in February and has now confirmed updated release plans alongside a revised title. Originally announced as The Adventures of Cliff Booth, the feature is now titled The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. The movie will stream on Netflix starting Dec. 23.

Audiences can catch the film in cinemas before its streaming premiere. Netflix announced an exclusive two-week global run in IMAX theaters beginning Nov. 25.

Brad Pitt reprises his role as Cliff Booth, which previously earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The original 2019 film took place in 1969, but the sequel jumps forward to 1977. Netflix describes the setting as “a very different Hollywood.”

The supporting cast includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis, and Karren Karagulian. Tarantino wrote the screenplay, though he has still not announced what his tenth and final directing project will be.

Reflecting on the original release, critic Karen Han described the 2019 film’s distinct tone:

“Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood is easily the quietest and most meditative of [Tarantino’s] works, ending with a startlingly soft and sweet moment that contextualizes everything that came before it as, ultimately, a love letter.”
