German filmmaker Uwe Boll has built a notorious reputation for his critically reviled film adaptations of gaming properties, including Bloodrayne, Postal, and House of the Dead. In a bizarre turn of events, his latest project—a film currently holding a dismal, single-digit rating on Rotten Tomatoes—is being adapted into an official video game. The timing appears calculated to leverage the ongoing backlash surrounding the movie, Citizen Vigilante.
Originally titled The Dark Knight, Citizen Vigilante features Armie Hammer (known for The Social Network and Call Me By Your Name) as Sanders, a protagonist who, according to the film’s promotional site, “takes justice into his own hands.” The narrative centers on his violent campaign against migrants, a crusade that earns him viral notoriety while placing him in direct opposition to a local police chief portrayed by Costas Mandylor. Boll’s hyper-violent feature claims to be inspired by actual events, though it has been skewered by reviewers as “morally bankrupt,” “borderline snuff,” and a “cheap, incoherent, and embarrassingly acted” disaster.
Despite critical condemnation, the film has found a niche following online. It recently broke into Prime Video’s top 10 rentals and purchases, buoyed by a promotional push from Elon Musk, who authorized a two-day free viewing event on X. This has led to a surreal disparity in reception: while critics handed it a 6% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently commands a 93% “Popcornmeter” audience score.
Boll has long been a lightning rod for controversy, having gained infamy for his aggressive feuds with journalists, which famously escalated to physical sparring matches with critics back in 2006. Though he ostensibly retired in 2016, his hiatus was short-lived. Following his 2022 release Hanau—a film centered on a QAnon-affiliated mass murderer—Boll has continued to produce his polarizing brand of cinema.
Now, Boll is pivoting to the gaming space. The director, who received a “Worst Career Achievement” award at the 2009 Razzies, announced that a Citizen Vigilante game is headed to PlayStation 5 this month. The title is being developed by Daniel Wengenroth of the German studio Polygon Art (no relation to this publication) and promises a similarly grim, blood-soaked revenge experience.

“When the system fails, justice becomes personal,” states the official PlayStation Store listing. “A city drowning in crime. A system at its breaking point. You are Sanders—not a savior, but a man pushed to the brink. Hunt down criminals, expose corruption, and deal with the fallout of your choices. To some, you’re a hero; to others, a menace.”
The developer is marketing the title with promises of “brutal, fast-paced action” and “unflinching, violent combat” featuring heavy dismemberment.
Meanwhile, the film’s star appears to have developed buyer’s remorse. According to a report from Puck, an insider close to Hammer claimed the actor was left “in tears” during his first viewing of the film, allegedly telling a confidant, “Fuck. This is hateful, disgusting.”
We will provide further updates on whether the Citizen Vigilante video game manages to mirror the extreme reception of its cinematic counterpart when it launches on July 17.
