Business is shifting toward open platforms.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick told CNBC that over the next decade the games industry is likely to lean more toward PC, although traditional consoles will remain relevant.
I believe the trend is toward PC, with businesses favoring open platforms over closed ecosystems. That said, if you think of a console as a space for play rather than merely hardware, the appeal of sinking into a game on a large screen for hours will never fade.
He noted that console and mobile market shares are currently roughly equal, but the mobile segment is expanding more rapidly.
According to Take-Two’s second-quarter financial results, mobile games from Zynga, Rollic and Nordeus generated 46% of the company’s net revenue, consoles accounted for 41%, and PC and other platforms made up 13%.
