Todd Howard’s celestial odyssey has already become a subject of endless debate; it seems Inon Zur simply hasn’t caught the cynical wave yet.
In a recent interview, celebrated composer Inon Zur reflected on his journey crafting soundtracks for some of the industry’s most iconic titles, specifically highlighting his work on Starfield. Zur noted that this project has become one of his personal favorites, ranking alongside his acclaimed contributions to Fallout 4, Rise of the Ronin, and the Syberia series.
When developing the sonic identity for Starfield, Zur explained that his goal was to find a delicate equilibrium between traditional “space-age” motifs and an entirely new musical dialect. He drew inspiration from the juxtaposition of the vast, seemingly eternal stillness of the cosmos against the frenetic activity within it—ships darting through the void, celestial objects appearing and vanishing, and the constant flux of deep space.
He consciously steered away from direct imitation of legendary sci-fi composers. While the influences of John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Vangelis, and Igor Stravinsky naturally permeate his style, Zur emphasized that his priority was translating the game’s specific emotional core and atmosphere. According to him, focusing on the game’s unique mood allowed the soundtrack to remain both distinctive and accessible to the listener.
Although the title hasn’t immediately mirrored the monumental cultural impact of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Fallout 4, the composer is convinced that the public’s perception will shift over time. He believes that many players were simply not ready for a project of this specific nature and scope at the time of its debut.
Zur also offered high praise for Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard, labeling him one of the most creative and galvanizing figures in the industry. The composer noted that Howard possesses a vivid clarity of vision, expertly balancing the team’s creative freedom with a firm hand that steers the work toward a singular conceptual goal.
Ultimately, Zur is certain that this unwavering commitment to a specific vision will allow Starfield to eventually take its place among the medium’s legends. In his view, ambitious projects often require a period of maturation before the audience can fully grasp and appreciate their underlying innovations.
