The era of consequence-free leaks has come to a halt as high-profile insiders face significant legal repercussions.
miHoYo (HoYoverse) is intensifying its campaign against the unauthorized disclosure of content for Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and the company’s other major intellectual properties.
It was recently revealed that law enforcement in Shanghai, China, apprehended a group of insiders. These three “enthusiasts” were actively distributing sensitive information online ahead of official announcements, having extracted data directly from internal test builds. These activities were conducted without any authorization from the copyright holder.
miHoYo’s legal team had previously issued multiple warnings regarding the group’s publications. However, these notices were systematically ignored, eventually compelling the developer to escalate the matter to the police.
Following the arrests, one member of the group reportedly stated, “We were just passionate fans and thought that as long as we deleted the videos after receiving a warning, everything would be fine.”
According to media reports, the evidence against suspects Su and Wu—who are accused of intellectual property infringement—has already been transferred to the prosecution for formal indictment.
The key figure in the operation, a suspect identified as Zhou, is currently subject to “criminal compulsory measures” as the investigation proceeds. This suggests a more severe level of legal scrutiny for the ringleader.
This case is part of a growing trend where leaking proprietary information from Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail leads to serious legal jeopardy. miHoYo’s legal representatives continue to issue DMCA takedowns and seek the identities of anonymous leakers across various international jurisdictions.
