Some players quickly grasped the developers’ concept.

Recently, CDPR writer Tomasz Marchewka sat down with GamesRadar+ to discuss Cyberpunk 2077.

He recalled how the team selected the antagonist — from the very early stages they understood that Night City itself would fill that role:

Very early on, even during Cyberpunk 2077’s pre-production, we realized Night City would serve as the central antagonist. Some players noticed that fairly quickly and later asked us about it. Naturally, there are mega-corporations like Arasaka, characters such as Adam Smasher, and many others, but in essence it’s Night City against everyone else — even the biggest players in the narrative. Turning the city itself into the main antagonist is a brilliant concept.

Marchewka added that he enjoys crafting imperfect characters — those with flaws, who make mistakes and wrestle with doubt:

I enjoy probing a character’s weaknesses. I’m fascinated by inevitable mistakes and how they steer a character’s journey. As you’ve probably noticed, that’s why my stories seldom end on a purely happy note. Still, exploring the darker facets of human nature is engrossing, because it often reveals truths about ourselves.
