“Categorically No”: Cillian Murphy Will Not Play Voldemort in the Harry Potter Series

Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy has officially debunked the persistent speculation regarding his involvement in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series.

For several months, social media enthusiasts have championed Murphy as the frontrunner to portray the dark wizard Lord Voldemort. However, the actor has firmly denied any connection to the new adaptation.

“Categorically no. Can you make that the headline?” Murphy stated emphatically during a conversation with The Irish Times.

The identity of the actor who will eventually step into Voldemort’s robes remains a mystery. Interestingly, Ralph Fiennes—who famously brought the antagonist to life in the original film franchise—previously endorsed Murphy as an ideal candidate for the role.

The debut season will be based on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The production reportedly features an ensemble cast including Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, Alastair Stout, John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Nick Frost, Paapa Essiedu, Johnny Flynn, and Lox Pratt. The show is being helmed by Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, the creative forces behind Succession and The Menu.

The Harry Potter reboot is slated to premiere on HBO in the first half of 2027. Meanwhile, Murphy is set to return to screens in the Peaky Blinders continuation, The Immortal Man, which arrives on Netflix on March 22.
