It turned out there was significant demand for the classic Resident Evil titles.
In 2024, GOG released the original Resident Evil (1996). The service later added Resident Evil 2 and 3.
In an interview with The Game Business, GOG’s business development manager revealed that Capcom was initially reluctant to approve such a release.
According to Marcin Paciński, Capcom believed there were already enough remakes. GOG, however, persisted, arguing that a segment of players wanted access to the original Resident Evil games.
The launch proved demand existed — and it even surpassed expectations:
“When we released [Resident Evil] on GOG, the response was simply phenomenal. Ninety-four percent of reviews across the titles were positive. That success was reflected in sales. It demonstrated the game has its own audience. The classic versions—the ones many of us remember from childhood—remain highly valued.”
