Activision and Infinity Ward have officially unveiled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. As the first franchise entry designed exclusively for current-generation hardware, the title leaves PlayStation 4 and Xbox One behind. It appears this shift marks a broader transition for the series, as Call of Duty: Warzone is also set to phase out support for last-gen consoles.
According to an official company update, the fan-favorite battle royale experience will be removed from the PlayStation and Xbox storefronts on June 4. Once this deadline passes, the game will no longer be available for new downloads. Existing owners can continue to access the title on PS4 and Xbox One through the conclusion of Season 6 for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7; however, Activision has confirmed that all support for these older platforms will wind down later this year.
While those remaining on last-gen hardware can still enjoy free Battle Pass tiers, access to the in-game store will be restricted. Starting June 4, any content purchased with real-world currency—such as COD Points, BlackCell bundles, and esports operator packs—will be scrubbed from the storefronts and menu systems on PS4 and Xbox One.
The final cutoff for in-game purchases occurs on June 25, when the store will be fully decommissioned for these legacy devices. Players are encouraged to redeem any remaining COD Points before this date. Fortunately, those who transition to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S will retain their progression, balance, and purchased cosmetics, provided their accounts remain linked under the same Activision profile.
Since its debut on March 10, 2020, Warzone has evolved into a massive, constantly shifting landscape for competitive shooters. Despite a significant 2.0 overhaul in 2022 and years of consistent updates, the platform is finally outgrowing its foundational hardware. While Warzone will continue to thrive on modern consoles and PC, this transition marks a bittersweet end for the significant segment of the community still playing on their original hardware.
