Call of Duty Cinematic Universe Set for 2028 Launch

Paramount Pictures officially confirmed at this year’s CinemaCon that a cinematic adaptation of Activision’s powerhouse Call of Duty franchise is slated for a June 30, 2028 release. This high-profile summer premiere is strategically timed to arrive just ahead of the iconic shooter series’ 25th anniversary.

Director Peter Berg, known for his work on Patriots Day and The Kingdom, has been tapped to helm the project. He is collaborating on the screenplay with Taylor Sheridan, the creative force behind Yellowstone and the scribe responsible for the taut scripts of Sicario and Hell or High Water. When the project was first teased last year, Activision and Paramount promised a premium blockbuster experience designed to honor the series’ storied legacy while broadening its appeal to an entirely new demographic.

“Our goal is to create an unforgettable, high-octane movie experience that resonates with our established community while captivating newcomers,” Rob Kostich, president of Activision, noted during the initial announcement. “We are committed to expanding the franchise’s greatness onto the big screen.”

According to Deadline, while Berg and Kostich debuted a sizzle reel for the film at CinemaCon, the footage consisted entirely of clips from the games rather than original cinematography.

Berg addressed the audience, highlighting his personal ties to the special operations community and his intention to translate the grounded, tactical intensity of modern military shooters into a cinematic format characterized by a massive, immersive scale.

Hollywood has spent over a decade attempting to translate Call of Duty’s grit to the silver screen. In 2015, the publisher established Activision Blizzard Studios to pivot its gaming IP into film and television, with a “robust cinematic universe” for Call of Duty being among its primary objectives. Previous iterations—including an early attempt helmed by Sicario: Day of the Soldado director Stefano Sollima—failed to move beyond the drawing board.

Call of Duty now joins an expanding roster of gaming intellectual properties being fast-tracked by major studios, following the massive commercial success of hits like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie. From A24’s upcoming ventures with Death Stranding and Elden Ring to Legendary’s Street Fighter reboot and the recent surge in Roblox-inspired cinema, the industry is currently in the midst of a significant video game adaptation land grab.

While details regarding the upcoming 2026 game entry remain under wraps, Activision has indicated a shift in their release philosophy. The publisher has confirmed it will move away from the tradition of back-to-back sequels within the same sub-franchise, suggesting players should not expect a Call of Duty: Black Ops 8 in the immediate future.
