Actress and director Marusya Fomina (known for “The Elephant”) is currently developing a feature-length biopic centered on the life of legendary composer and virtuoso pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff.
Titled “Rachmaninoff,” the film will chronicle the musician’s professional and personal evolution, spanning his formative years at the Moscow Conservatory and early triumphs to the profound creative impasse he faced, followed by his celebrated resurgence. The project is scheduled for release in 2028, coinciding with the 155th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
While the lead actor has yet to be revealed, the screenplay is being penned by Alexander Rodionov (noted for “Everybody Dies but Me”). The production will be shot entirely on film, with a specific premiere date to be confirmed at a later time.
This is not the first cinematic exploration of the composer’s life; in 2007, director Pavel Lungin released the drama “The Lilac Bush,” featuring Evgeny Tsyganov as Rachmaninoff. Additionally, audiences can look forward to Alexei Uchitel’s upcoming 2026 film “The Noise of Time,” which focuses on the life of Dmitri Shostakovich, a contemporary of Rachmaninoff.
