The sports biographical drama “Christy” debuted in U.S. cinemas last week, bringing in $1.3 million.
That figure ranks among the poorest openings ever for a film released on roughly two thousand screens, according to media outlets. “Christy” sits ninth on the list of lowest openings on record.
The movie follows boxer Christy Martin (Sydney Sweeney), the first woman to be inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame. Sweeney has already addressed the news on social media, thanking audiences for their support:
“We don’t always make art for the numbers — we make it to move people. ‘Christy’ has been the most fulfilling project of my life,” the actress wrote on Instagram* (the social network is owned by Meta and has been designated extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
“Christy” was directed by David Michôd (director of “The Rover”). Critics have been generally positive, giving the film a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
