Battlefield 6 arrives today, and it appears Battlefield Labs will become an enduring part of how the series is developed.

Battlefield Labs is an invite-only testing environment where developers trial gameplay ideas and systems with real players, gathering concentrated community feedback during development. Despite being restricted access, it has already produced a number of leaks and—more importantly—contributed to the game’s evolution.

In issue 415 of PC Gamer, lead producer Nika Bender and design director Salim Fasahat explained their community-driven workflow. “Developing a live game gives us immediate access to player feedback. BF Labs lets us collect that input while there’s still time to act on it,” Bender said.

Fasahat added that Labs has played a major role in development and will likely remain a core tool going forward. “A lot of our testing focuses on weapon balance. The community raised concerns about time-to-kill and time-to-death, and those exactly are the kinds of adjustments we’re exploring and iterating on inside Labs,” he said.

Bender emphasised the studio’s faith in community input: tapping player perspectives is a central, if informal, pillar of their process. The team is experimenting broadly—trying new approaches while still borrowing elements from fan-favorite entries like Battlefield 3 and 4 as inspiration.

Relying on community direction is often critical for live-service titles, though the developers note that designers must ultimately guide the game rather than cede complete control to players.
