We also recently gathered developers from across Battlefield Studios for another interactive Battlefield Discord Live Q&A (discord.gg/battlefield). During this 60-minute session, the team tackled 50 pressing community questions concerning Season 4 and the future of the franchise.
What’s Next for Battlefield 6
The journey for Battlefield 6 is far from over. From imminent features dropping later in Season 4 to expansive maps, social tools, and major updates slated for Season 5, there is a lot to anticipate. Below is a detailed breakdown of upcoming releases, testing milestones, and how you can help shape these experiences through Battlefield Labs.

Custom Lobbies and Spectator Mode
Custom Lobbies and Spectator Mode officially arrive with Season 4 Phase 2: Top Gun on August 18, rolling out via Battlefield Labs in Live.
Expanding upon the robust framework of Portal, Custom Lobbies grant match hosts unprecedented control over their sessions. Hosts can seamlessly assign players to specific teams, fine-tune match parameters, and organize private games or community tournaments—all while Spectator Mode allows observers to capture every cinematic moment.
Initial support will focus on Battle Royale Quads and Conquest, with additional modes slated to join as the feature scales. Stay tuned for a dedicated deep-dive article prior to the Top Gun update launch.
Proximity Chat
The inaugural rollout of Proximity Chat drops with Season 4 Phase 3: Tidal Strike on September 15, debuting via Battlefield Labs in Live.
Initially integrated into Battle Royale, this feature introduces dynamic tactical communication opportunities, allowing for spontaneous audio encounters between nearby squads and solo operators.
By launching through Battlefield Labs in Live, our team can carefully evaluate audio clarity, distance falloff, moderation controls, and overall impact on battlefield pacing. Your direct feedback and telemetry data will guide our final adjustments before Proximity Chat expands to standard Multiplayer modes.
Maps in Season 5
Looking past Season 4, Season 5 will introduce three distinct maps, as highlighted in our 2026 roadmap. Early playtesting is already underway within Battlefield Labs, enabling us to gather vital community impressions and polish each arena prior to launch.
While we aren’t quite ready to unveil the specific global coordinates for these battles, we can confirm their design philosophies: one map places heavy emphasis on tight, infantry-focused engagements, while the other two are engineered for large-scale, combined-arms warfare synonymous with the Battlefield legacy.

Alongside these three additions, comprehensive overhauls for Blackwell Fields and New Sobek City are scheduled to drop later in Season 5.
Before these reworks hit the live environment, they will undergo rigorous testing in Battlefield Labs. This gives you a chance to experience the revised layouts early, helping us evaluate objective flows, traversal routes, and the delicate balance between infantry and heavy armor.
Server Browser and Matchmaking
The Server Browser will enter Battlefield Labs testing ahead of its official Season 5 Phase 3 deployment, giving players an early sandbox to test functionality and help us streamline the browsing experience.
We are actively investigating how the Server Browser can facilitate persistent match flows, making it simpler to stay with the same squad between rounds while seamlessly complementing standard matchmaking.
We will unveil interface previews and server discovery options closer to the Battlefield Labs launch window. For now, here is where our current development stands:

While the Server Browser provides an alternative method for finding matches, it is designed to work alongside—not replace—our ongoing overhauls to the core matchmaking infrastructure.
Matchmaking remains a frequent topic of conversation within our community, particularly concerning lobby consistency and match quality. Our engineers are investigating persistent pain points, such as matches launching or backfilling with excessive AI combatants, erratic ticket counts, and players getting routed into high-ping servers.
Because these issues rely on deeply interconnected systems, we will publish a dedicated developer blog once our investigation concludes, outlining our findings and concrete steps for improvement.
Platoons
The long-awaited return of Platoons remains firmly on schedule for Season 5 Phase 3.
At launch, players will be able to found or enlist in Platoons, utilizing dedicated in-game management tools to proudly display and organize their gaming units. This initial rollout establishes the baseline architecture for Platoons in Battlefield 6, paving the way for deeper community and social integration in subsequent updates.
Multiplayer Leaderboards
Multiplayer Leaderboards are locked in for the Season 5 launch.
Building upon the statistical frameworks established during Ranked Battle Royale, this feature introduces robust ways to monitor your competitive standing and compare milestones across the broader Multiplayer ecosystem. Specific details regarding stat categories and ranking systems will be revealed closer to launch.
Multiplayer Ranked
Development on Multiplayer Ranked continues to progress, heavily informed by telemetry and community reception following the rollout of Ranked Battle Royale in Season 3. Our design team is currently iterating on the competitive rulesets and backend systems required to support true competitive integrity at Battlefield scale.
While we do not have a finalized release window to share just yet, the team is evaluating the optimal time to introduce Multiplayer Ranked without compromising quality. Expect further updates as production moves forward.
Weapon, Vehicle, and Gadget Balance
Recent gunplay adjustments in Season 3 have been met with overwhelmingly positive reception. According to our latest Community Survey, sentiment surrounding Weapon Balance surged by 23 points between June and July, flipping the community consensus from negative to deeply positive.

We are continuously analyzing gameplay telemetry to understand how these tweaks alter real-time engagements. Early indicators show that the average time-to-kill (TTK) has increased, and players winning firefights are absorbing more incoming damage, leaving adversaries with fairer windows to retaliate.
While these are promising metrics, performance naturally fluctuates across different weapon classes, engagement distances, and player skill brackets. We will continue monitoring live data and listening closely before enacting sweeping changes.
Our balancing efforts extend far beyond small arms. We are conducting deep reviews of armored vehicle combat and gadget efficacy, specifically analyzing how these systems interact with infantry and each other across diverse game modes.
We will continue tracking these dynamics alongside upcoming Season 4 and Season 5 content drops. Expect continuous evolution driven by your feedback, accompanied by in-depth Battlefield Combat developer breakdowns once adjustments are finalized.
More from the Discord Q&A
During our recent Battlefield Discord Live Q&A, developers from across the studio fielded as many community inquiries as possible. A massive thank you to everyone who tuned in and submitted questions.
Below is a curated archive of the questions addressed during the live session. We are also reviewing the backlog of questions we couldn’t reach due to time constraints, and we will look to tackle those topics in future Community Updates and Patch Notes.
Note: Some questions have been slightly edited for clarity, brevity, and readability.
Q: Are there plans to introduce authentic lens/sight glow to weapon optics similar to Battlefield V?
A: We are actively developing reticle improvements designed to boost visibility against complex environmental backgrounds. We are currently in the testing phase and hope to push these changes live as soon as they are fully optimized.
Q: What is the current status of the New Sobek City and Blackwell Fields map reworks? Will they hit Labs soon?
A: Both maps remain on track for release later in Season 5. We will begin internal and public Labs testing imminently, and we will share comprehensive overviews of their design evolutions later in Season 4.
Q: Will the upcoming Phantom Program event in Season 4 rely strictly on structured assignments, or will it feature intricate community Easter eggs like classic titles?
A: It’s a hybrid of both! The progression is structured around specific challenges, but uncovering and completing them will require hunting down and solving intricate Easter eggs hidden throughout Fort Lyndon.
Q: With air radar fixed and a server browser on the horizon, what is the next major feature players can look forward to?
A: Custom Lobbies represent a major evolution of Portal. When Phase 2 launches on August 18, hosts will gain access to a dynamic interface allowing team assignments and live match parameter adjustments. This empowers players to host private tournaments complete with Spectator Mode capabilities. Initial support will roll out progressively, starting with Battle Royale Quads and Conquest in Battlefield Labs in Live.
Q: Is there any possibility of bringing back large-scale ‘Levolution’ mechanics akin to Battlefield 4? Why were they absent in BF6?
A: Our core design philosophy focuses on targeted, set-piece destruction. We want to deliver massive, tactical destruction milestones that alter combat pathways and sightlines without sacrificing the fundamental flow and competitive identity of a map. Keep your eyes peeled in Season 5!
Q: The roadmap mentioned proximity chat testing for REDSEC. Will it eventually come to standard Battlefield multiplayer modes?
A: Yes. Proximity Chat debuts in Phase 3 of Season 4 within REDSEC Battle Royale. Our roadmap plan is to expand Proximity Chat into standard Multiplayer thereafter. We will evaluate its performance and player reception in REDSEC matches to fine-tune subsequent iterations.
Q: Can you share more concrete details about Platoons?
A: Platoons is an exciting social feature launching in Season 5. We will share a deep-dive blog detailing its full functionality later in Season 4.
Q: When can we expect a new REDSEC map, and will future updates prioritize maritime combat or land-based skirmishes?
A: We plan to continually refresh the existing Fort Lyndon map with engaging new POIs. Water-centric gameplay elements will hit REDSEC in full force with the introduction of the new Carrier POI during Season 4 Phase 2.
Q: What new content is coming to Portal in Season 4? Will creators get access to aircraft carriers and brand-new developer tools?
A: All Season 4 maps will be integrated into both verified and custom Portal playlists. As for new developer tools and assets, keep an eye on our community update blogs for official release announcements.
Q: Are there plans to isolate Elite 250 and Master-tier players in matchmaking so lower-tier players aren’t overwhelmed while trying to progress?
A: This is a high-priority area we want to improve, though we do not have an exact deployment timeline to share yet. Balancing matchmaking queue times against skill bracket separation is a complex puzzle our team is actively working to solve.
Q: Many players are clamoring for dynamic atmospheric weather and dedicated night maps. Is the team considering this?
A: We hear your feedback loud and clear regarding dynamic weather and night combat! While we explore future map options, you can experience fantastic night operations right now via Battlefield Portal. Check out Night Ops Conquest created by ViperStudioAndy (Experience Code: 1XVU6)!
Q: With free-diving mechanics implemented, will the Portal map editor ever let creators adjust water levels to flood custom maps?
A: For our naval-focused maps, we are actively building functionality that allows creators to modify water levels, targeting a release later in Season 4. Expanding this capability globally across all legacy maps is a complex feature we are currently evaluating for future seasons.
Q: Any updates regarding Main Battle Tanks, weapon customization options, or the return of canister shells?
A: We have a hotfix targeting the Anti-Personnel Shell exploit arriving later in Season 4, followed by a permanent architectural fix in a subsequent patch. We are also reviewing the ammunition loadouts and secondary weapon pools for MBTs and IFVs for future balance passes.
Q: Are battlefield pickups making a permanent return? I found a minigun on Eastwood once last season and never saw it again.
A: Initial iterations suffered from balance and quality inconsistencies. However, we have completely overhauled and tuned these pickups, and they will be re-introduced across current and future maps.
Q: Why has the team shifted from large, content-heavy expansions (like BF3/BF4 Premium) to smaller, drip-fed seasonal drops featuring only one map and a handful of weapons?
A: Season 4 is packed with substantial content—including Wake Island, Carrier Strike, Fighter Sweep, Custom Lobbies, Spectator Mode, Proximity Chat, and our massive Top Gun collaboration launching August 18. This is followed by an enormous Season 5 featuring three new maps, full reworks of Blackwell Fields and New Sobek City, Platoons, and additional surprises. There is plenty on the way!
Q: Will Commander Mode ever make a return in Battlefield 6?
A: There are no current plans to officially integrate Commander Mode into baseline Battlefield 6. However, talented creators have recreated it in Battlefield Portal—you can experience it firsthand via Experience Code: 1ZXUU by Nodone.
Q: Are the two new modes arriving in Phase 2—Carrier Strike and Gauntlet—going to be permanent additions?
A: Carrier Strike launches alongside Season 4 Phase 2 (Top Gun), and Fighter Sweep arrives as a new mission within Gauntlet. These modes will initially run as limited-time experiences so we can analyze telemetry and community reception. Based on your feedback, we have the flexibility to rotate them back in and expand them to additional maps.
Q: Is there any chance Portal will ever offer a true “blank slate” canvas with access to every architectural asset?
A: Engine limitations prevent us from providing a universal blank slate containing every single asset on a single map. Over time, we plan to release dedicated builder-centric maps featuring biome-specific asset pools. We carefully vet new additions to ensure core assets perform efficiently across multiple custom experiences.
Q: Do you have a concrete timeframe to fix the netcode? It currently feels far worse than BFV and impacts playability.
A: We are continuously evaluating and optimizing netcode performance for both Battlefield 6 and REDSEC. We have deployed numerous micro-patches since Season 2 and remain committed to utilizing live telemetry and player feedback to ensure fair, responsive gunplay.
Q: Will we see jet loadouts overhauled and improved in Season 4 alongside the Top Gun collaboration?
A: The F/A-81F Super Spectre is our brand-new two-seater jet arriving in Season 4 Phase 2, featuring a fully customizable loadout. While we have plans for legacy aircraft, we cannot share a firm timeline just yet.
Q: Any updates on the Strikepoint game mode?
A: We are actively working on mechanical improvements and plan to reintroduce an updated version of Strikepoint in a future season!
Q: Portal is incredible, but featured experiences frequently suffer from severe rubber-banding and network lag. When will this improve?
A: Performance degradation in custom experiences usually stems from extreme script execution complexity or an overabundance of physical assets spawned by creators. While we internally vet experiences, massive player scaling can expose bottlenecks. We have refined our selection pipeline to ensure featured modes meet strict performance standards, and we are working to guide creators on best optimization practices.
Q: Can you share the dates and esports format for the REDSEC Open and Elite Series?
A: We cannot share exact calendar dates just yet, but official announcements regarding tournament kickoffs are on the horizon. Stay tuned!
Q: Operations was immensely popular in Season 2, but absent in Season 3. Will it return soon? Could it replace Breakthrough?
A: Operation Augur will continue to rotate into our official playlists regularly. Beyond that, we hear your enthusiasm and have much bigger plans for Operations in future seasons!
Q: Are you planning another balance pass on air vehicles—specifically attack helicopters and the Little Bird, which currently dominate Tsuru Reef?
A: Vehicle, gadget, and weapon balancing is an ongoing, seasonal priority across Battlefield 6 and REDSEC. Season 4 includes specific durability buffs for the RCB-90 and Armored Transport to help them counter Scout Helicopters. Expect detailed notes in our upcoming Community Updates.
Q: Is there content planned beyond Season 5? I’d hate to see support cut short.
A: With Season 4 Phase 2 (Top Gun) on the horizon and our biggest season yet dropping in Season 5, we feel like we’re just getting warmed up! Additional seasons featuring exciting new content are locked in beyond Season 5.
Q: Will Spectator Mode and Custom Lobbies be supported in custom Portal experiences or restricted to verified modes?
A: We are striving to make these features universally compatible. However, because they were built with core modes in mind, complex custom Portal logic can occasionally trigger unexpected conflicts. We want the community to experiment so we can strategically expand support based on what works best.
Q: Will TTK/TTD parameters be adjusted alongside footstep audio fixes? Footstep audio remains inconsistent.
A: We are constantly testing gunplay mechanics, movement fluidity, and damage models to find the ideal TTK/TTD sweet spot. Audio clarity is also a high-focus investigation for our audio engineers, and further refinements are on the way.
Q: Are you planning a 2027 Roadmap mirroring the 2026 structure?
A: We are fully dedicated to supporting Battlefield 6 and REDSEC well past Season 5, and we look forward to sharing our long-term vision toward the end of the year.
Q: Will suppression mechanics return to how they functioned in older franchise titles?
A: Suppression remains a divisive mechanic. While we are evaluating its role, any potential reintroduction will undergo rigorous prototyping and testing in Battlefield Labs before touching the live game.
Q: Are there plans to introduce Ranked modes to standard Multiplayer instead of keeping it exclusive to REDSEC?
A: Competitive play is foundational to the Battlefield experience. We are actively exploring avenues to expand our competitive offerings and designing a tailored Ranked Multiplayer ecosystem.
Q: Is specific weapon tuning planned for REDSEC? The current meta (SVDM, KTS, SCW) has grown stale.
A: Yes. We are specifically targeting long-range weapon metas in REDSEC, evaluating adjustments to recoil patterns, ammunition reserves, loot pool availability, and damage scaling against armor.
Q: What are the plans for expanding naval combat? Patch notes mentioned amphibious vehicles, but none are currently available.
A: Our immediate focus is delivering remaining Season 4 content. From there, we will analyze how naval mechanics influence core gameplay before mapping out long-term expansions. That said, massive naval additions—including two-seater jets and operational aircraft carriers—arrive imminently with Phase 2!
Q: Will heavy support units like artillery strikes or electronic warfare aircraft be added to inject more chaos into matches?
A: We have some thrilling heavy vehicles slated for future content drops that will certainly satisfy that craving!
Q: Abandoned game modes currently fragment the player base into bot-filled lobbies. How will you address this?
A: We recognize that excessive playlist splits degrade match quality. To ensure lightning-fast queues and full human lobbies, we are consolidating official matchmaking into high-traffic, rotating playlists. Furthermore, Season 5’s Server Browser will allow players to easily spin up or locate dedicated matches for specific modes.
Q: Can 9K38 IGLA missiles be tweaked so they don’t instantly bypass flares? Pilots currently have zero counterplay aside from terrain masking.
A: A comprehensive overhaul of the Air-to-Air combat loop is arriving later in Season 4, alongside a complete evaluation of the IGLA’s baseline mechanics. Stay tuned for release notes!
Q: Are cross-studio IP crossovers (e.g., Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Apex Legends) feasible for Battlefield?
A: Future crossover collaborations are in development, but maintaining the authentic identity of Battlefield remains paramount. We always welcome community feedback on which franchises you’d like to see. First up: our massive Top Gun collaboration in Season 4 Phase 2!
Q: Attack Boats currently feel fragile and sluggish, while their lock-on TOW missiles feel oppressive to pilots. Any tweaks coming?
A: The RCB-90 is a brand-new vehicle, and we are heavily processing live telemetry. We’ve identified two urgent fixes arriving in Season 4: increased physical stability to prevent tipping over, and enhanced durability against Scout Helicopter firepower, alongside general handling passes.
Q: Beyond the Server Browser, could official persistent lobbies feature team-shuffling after every round to eliminate bot-heavy lobbies in low-population regions?
A: We are continuously investigating algorithmic improvements to matchmaking and lobby construction to strike the ideal balance between queue speed and match quality across all global regions.
Q: Can movement mechanics be reverted closer to the BFV or beta builds to reward high-skill gunfights?
A: Season 4 focused heavily on expanding aquatic movement states (diving, wading, swimming). With these foundational physics now live, we will process player data and feedback to continuously refine ground movement fluidity moving forward.
Q: Is there any chance the “sweet spot” mechanic for sniper rifles will be entirely removed? One-shot body hits remain frustrating.
A: Season 3 balance adjustments to this mechanic did not yield the desired results. Bolt-action rifles and DMRs remain a primary balance focus, and any iterative changes will be thoroughly tested in Battlefield Labs prior to live deployment.
Q: Where is the Megalodon?
A: Lurking…
Q: Portal stats were temporarily removed from player profiles. Are dedicated Portal stats still returning?
A: Tracking Portal-specific statistics requires a massive technical undertaking. Our current priority has been expanding builder tools to ensure creative diversity. We hear your strong desire for robust UGX progression tracking and are investigating options—stay tuned to our Community Update blogs!
Q: Will players eventually be able to rent dedicated Battlefield servers through certified third-party hosts once the Server Browser launches?
A: We have no plans for third-party server rentals at this time. Our immediate focus is successfully deploying the Server Browser in Season 5. Read our next Community Update for more details!
Q: Can we achieve greater stability in Portal? Every patch breaks custom experiences, draining creators’ motivation.
A: We deeply understand how frustrating it is when updates break custom creations. As a live-service game, core engine updates inevitably impact Portal logic. To mitigate this, we intentionally group our changes into fewer, larger updates rather than constant micro-patches, ensuring long stretches of stability for creators.
Q: Will experience builders ever get API mod functions to trigger environmental destruction or detect destroyed SpatialObjects?
A: While builders can damage players and vehicles, environmental destruction APIs sit on our long-term backlog. Initial technical investigations reveal this is an exceptionally challenging feature, but we hope to schedule it for a future season if feasibility permits.
Q: Controller responsiveness feels wildly inconsistent between updates. Could netcode jitter be impacting aim assist and input latency?
A: We are continuously optimizing input responsiveness. Countless variables—from server jitter to network latency—affect input feel. We recently added a stick debug overlay toggle in the options menu (near deadzone settings) to provide real-time telemetry and help diagnose hardware or double-deadzone anomalies.
Q: Will verified Portal creators gain options to disable thermal optics and split infantry/vehicle crosshair settings?
A: This feature is not currently on our roadmap. However, priorities adapt based on player feedback, and we will continuously re-evaluate its feasibility for future patches.
Q: Are you considering faction-appropriate counterparts for the Blackhawk and the newly added Patrol Boat?
A: We are evaluating various military hardware additions for future seasons, but we have no specific vehicle reveals to share at this moment.
