Amazon Cuts Jobs in Its Gaming Division and Twitch

Altogether, more than 14,000 employees across the company’s various divisions will be laid off.

Amazon has announced sweeping layoffs affecting over 14,000 corporate employees — the largest round of job cuts in the company’s history. Units hit include Amazon Games, the Twitch streaming service, and Amazon Web Services.

According to Bloomberg, the bulk of the reductions will fall on offices in Irvine and San Diego, as well as the central publishing division. The company intends to scale back development on big-budget titles, particularly multiplayer online games.

We are proud of what we’ve achieved in AAA game development and publishing, but we’ve made the difficult decision to halt a substantial portion of that work. This will involve significant reductions in roles at our studios in Irvine and San Diego, as well as within the central publishing team.
Steve Boom, Vice President, Twitch — Sound and Games at Amazon.
