id Software Co-Director Says Studio Is Doing Well After Microsoft Laid Off About Half Its Staff
id Software co-studio head Marty Stratton says the developers are doing well and continue to work actively on new projects despite widespread layoffs in Microsoft’s gaming division.
Stratton would probably be less upbeat if he had been laid off himself.

As part of an Xbox restructuring led by Asha Sharma, id Software lost around 136 employees. Reports said nearly half of the studio’s team left. The layoffs included specialists working on the proprietary id Tech engine, which is used in all games from the developers of Doom and Quake.
Everything is great with us. I don’t want to downplay the layoffs. Everyone knows that approximately half the staff left the studio as a result of this process. However, targeted efforts were made to ensure the team’s viability across all areas of our work, including game development and the technology division.
