Netflix’s live-action take on Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender moves into its Earth-focused chapter in season two, introducing Aang’s earthbending mentor Toph Beifong (Miya Cech). The new footage teases Toph demonstrating her abilities inside an underground bending ring.
Blind from birth, Toph reads the world by feeling vibrations through the soil — a talent she honed with the help of the giant badgermoles (a creature that’s recently shown up in the Magic: The Gathering crossover). Her narration in the teaser underscores that intimate bond with the earth while a blindfolded Aang (Gordon Cormier) attempts his first lessons. For a free-spirited airbender used to floating above the ground, learning to listen to the planet beneath his feet proves challenging.
Image: NetflixAfter Admiral Zhao’s death in season one, Princess Azula (Elizabeth Yu) emerges as the series’ foremost antagonist, further straining the fractured relationships with her banished brother Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) and their uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee). The teaser cuts to Azula and her allies Mai (Thalia Tran) and Ty Lee (Momona Tamada) in pursuit of Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Suki (Maria Zhang), while Iroh tutors Zuko in techniques to counter Azula’s lightning attacks.
We also see Appa and Momo flying alongside Teo (Lucian-River Chauhan), who appears to have fled Omashu following Azula’s assault at the end of season one. Omashu becomes Aang’s first destination this season as he seeks training from his old friend King Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar), only to discover Bumi has been taken captive by the Fire Nation. Netflix’s preview additionally teases the colossal sea creature that defends the Serpent’s Pass — the perilous channel through which Team Avatar escorts refugees toward the Earth Kingdom capital, Ba Sing Se.
Seasons two and three were shot consecutively, and production on season three has already concluded.
