Danny Boyle’s “Inks” Opens the 83rd Venice Film Festival

The 83rd Venice Film Festival has officially kicked off in Italy, opening with the premiere of Danny Boyle’s highly anticipated biopic, Ink.

The film chronicles the rise of the British tabloid The Sun, beginning with Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition of the paper in 1969. Under the editorial guidance of Larry Lamb, the publication famously transformed into one of the most widely read newspapers in the United Kingdom.

Guy Pearce, who portrays Murdoch, shared at a press conference that the media mogul himself approved of the casting, a sentiment conveyed to Pearce by Murdoch’s daughter, Elisabeth.

The screenplay is adapted from James Graham’s 2017 stage play of the same name, with Graham himself penning the film adaptation.

“For me, this play is centered on Larry Lamb. My goal was to craft a film that felt distinct from its theatrical roots, so I requested the addition of more dialogue, as the writing is simply brilliant,”

Boyle explained. The director also noted that he made a conscious effort to avoid the common trope of portraying Murdoch as a caricature of villainy.

The film features strong performances from Jack O’Connell and Claire Foy. Ink is currently competing for the festival’s top prize alongside 20 other features. Early critical reception has been highly favorable, boasting a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 80/100 score on Metacritic. In Russia, the film will be distributed by Amediateka.
