Friday the 13th Screenwriter Victor Miller Dies

Victor Miller, the American screenwriter best known for penning the original 1980 horror classic Friday the 13th, passed away on August 31 in Alameda, California. He was 86. His son, Ian Miller, confirmed the news, though no cause of death was disclosed.

Miller wrote the screenplay for the inaugural Friday the 13th film, directed by Sean Cunningham. He is credited with creating the iconic characters of Pamela Voorhees, her son Jason, and the survivor Alice Hardy. Notably, the portrayal of Jason evolved significantly over time; in Miller’s original film, the killer is actually Pamela, with Jason appearing only in brief, haunting flashbacks. Later installments transformed Jason into the series’ central antagonist, cementing his status as one of the most recognizable figures in slasher cinema history.

Following the success of Friday the 13th, Miller largely stepped away from the film franchise, dedicating his career primarily to television writing.
