A New Metro Game Is Finally Coming

4A Games is set to pull back the curtain on the next installment of their acclaimed Metro series this Thursday during a dedicated Xbox showcase. As confirmed by publisher Deep Silver on Monday, Metro 2039 marks the franchise’s first major entry since 2019’s Metro Exodus.

The developer and publisher will host a world-premiere reveal on Thursday, April 16, during a digital broadcast. Fans can catch the stream live at 10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. BST via the official Xbox YouTube channel.

Metro 2039 serves as the fourth core title in the series, which draws its narrative foundation from Dmitry Glukhovsky’s celebrated novels. The franchise’s history includes Metro 2033 (2010), Metro: Last Light (2013), and Metro Exodus (2019). The series has also expanded through various releases, such as the Metro Redux collection and 2024’s virtual reality outing, Metro Awakening, which launched on Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and SteamVR.

Spanning two decades, the Metro games transport players to a desolate, post-apocalyptic Moscow, devastated by the catastrophic fallout of nuclear and biological warfare. While Metro 2039 has not been announced as an Xbox exclusive, Microsoft noted, “Xbox has always been a home for the franchise, and we’re honored to continue that relationship by bringing you a first look at this next exciting chapter.”

We previously lauded the series’ latest entry, describing Metro Exodus as a sequel that successfully “flirts with optimism and hope.” In our review, we noted: “While 2033 and Last Light were preoccupied with humanity’s self-destructive tendencies in the wake of nuclear fallout, Exodus shifts the perspective. Despite the brutal, monstrous realities of survival, the game offers a refreshing, poignant injection of hope into the Russian post-apocalypse.”
