HBO is developing another Game of Thrones spin-off that promises a fresh perspective on the world of Westeros.
Soon HBO will introduce another prequel set in George R.R. Martin’s universe. Titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, the series will function as a self-contained story with a tone that departs noticeably from the original show, showrunner Ira Parker told Entertainment Weekly.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a drama set ninety years before Game of Thrones and roughly fifty years after the dragons vanished. The series will portray “rugged, steadfast medieval knights.”
At its core are the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, who conceals his connection to House Targaryen. The six-episode first season adapts the novella The Hedge Knight and follows the pair on their journey to the tourney at Ashford.
Parker emphasizes that this installment will not dwell on “lords and ladies, kings and queens” or their power struggles. Instead, the show will center on Westeros’s lower ranks — armourers, performers, sex workers and other ordinary people.
The intent to ground the story will be evident in every element, including the title sequence. Parker noted the creative team deliberately rejected the elaborate animated openings used in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon; viewers will instead see a modest intro that reflects the protagonist’s plainspoken nature.
George R.R. Martin, who serves as an executive producer on the project, has already screened the entire first season and was pleased with it. If the series performs well, HBO plans to adapt additional novellas from the Tales of Dunk and Egg.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres in January 2026 on HBO and Max. The lead roles are played by Peter Klaeffi and Dexter Sol Ansell.
